"Insane Asylum", "Dead Presidents"

+ more from the Willie Dixon songbook they didn't already do (i.e., Pain In My Heart, The Same Thing)

"Sultan Of Swing" - Dire Straits;
didn't Jerry Garcia say this band (DS) had found the sound that they (GD) were trying to find?

Lest my screen name tip my hand too much.........

"Same Old River"

With Grisman on mandolin, Tony Rice guesting on guitar, Jerry Douglas on dobro, Vassar Clements on fiddle.

Then I could die quite content (I am already happy)

They can play this at the inauguration -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3mi-bKtDGA

Word on the "street" is that both the line up that played at PSU and the Boss will be among those performing. If so, then they should all do a really, haphazrad bad version of Born To Run.

Of course, I always thought they should have had Jerry do "What's so funny about peace, love and understanding" as a ballad.

Oh come on Styro - get real.

" Promised Land " is just brilliant - all the best Dead concerts start with it (e.g. " Sunshine Daydream "). And when Bob flubs the lyrics (easy enough in this case) it escallates it to the dizzy heights of " Truckin' ".

"My Ding A Ling" is just novelty - is that what you want for your band ?? Oh, I get it - you were joking .......

"Le Morte d'Arthur" written by Mallory while in jail ....
"Promised Land" written by Berry while in jail ....
"My Ding A Ling" written by Berry while he was pissed ....

Say no more.

But keep smiling.

Wabash Cannonball

Listen to the jingle the rumble and the roar as she glides along the woodland
ore the hills and by the shore
hear the rush of the mighty engine hear the lonesome hobos call
he's riding through the jungle on the Wabash cannon ball

now the western states are dandies so the southern people say from Chicago
and St. Louis
and Peoria by the way
to the lake of Minnesota where the rippling waters flow no chances to be
taken on
the Wabash cannon ball

she pulled in to the station one cold December day
as she rolled up to the platform you could hear all the people say
now theirs a gal from Birmingham she's Elong and she's tall she came down
from Georgia
on the Wabash cannon ball

now heres to daddy claxton may his name forever stand
and always be remembered in the courts of all the land
his earthly race is over and as the curtain falls
we'll carry him back to Dixie on the Wabash cannon ball

ideal mix c&w/Chuck B. style r&r

I have nothing to add.....but should it not be "Songs they SHOULD have done."?

"SONGS" in CAPS, seems to imply there may be other categories forthcoming. Perhaps, "JOKES they should have done."?

Ok, I'm always up for a good tip. I will check it out. And as a die-hard Pig fan, I *do* like "Run Rudolph Run." :)

UPDATE: ookay, I listened to that 12/16/78 Around And Around...and it is very good, especially the 'boogie' around 4:20 (!). But it's an AUD, so I can only assume Phil was at that gig, 'cuz I sure can't hear him. And there's a great dynamic quiet part... so the band disappears and all you get is the AUD ambience...I want to hear what they're doing! Enough complaints, that is a superior version, thanks... :)

oh wait!!! LET'S STOP FUCK&*G AROUND! here's the Real Deal!

Theres a lady in a turban
In a cocaine tree
And she does a dance so rhythmically
Shes a crying and a singing
Havin a time
But dont that cocaine tree look fine

But you gotta put on your sailin shoes
Put on your sailin shoes
Everyone will start to cheer
When you put on your sailin shoes

Doctor, doctor, I feel so bad
This is the worst day I ever had
Have you this misery a very long time?
Well if you if, Ill lay it on the line

But you gotta put on your sailin shoes
Put on your sailin shoes
Everyone will hip hooray
When you put on your sailin shoes

Jedidah
Hes got a dime
Says he catches more fish every time
Well Ive gotta line
If youve got a pole
Well Ill meet you at the fishing hole

But you gotta put on your sailin shoes
Put on your sailin shoes
Everyone will start to cheer
When you put on your sailin shoes

Said, everyone put on
Put on your sailin shoes

J J Cale stuff would fit really well with that shuffling rhythmn. I'm not sure whether covering a Pink Floyd number would have worked - imagine this between Moumtains of the Moon and Saint Stephen http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=v5_0iZQ-TuA It would have to be TC on keyboards I guess.

This might have been OK http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=C8sNEedLeHY ,and I could see this working post drums http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=4-MLxgkiPNg

(i trust you and all have a more listenable version!)

Forefather pointed
to kingdom come
Sadly told his only son
Just be careful what you do
It all comes back on you.

False witness spread the news
Somebody's gonna lose
Either she or me or you,
Nothing we can do.

(Chorus)

So
Don't you say a word
Or reveal a thing
you've learned
Time will tell you well
If you truly, truly fell
Tarred and feathered, yea!
Thistles and thorns,
One or the other
He kindly warns.
Now you look out the
window tell me
What do you see?
I see a golden calf pointing
Back at me.

I been sitting in here
for so darn long
Waitin' for the end
to come along.
Holy roaster on the brink
Take a chance, swim or sink.

False witness, cast an evil eye
said I cannot tell a lie,
Haints and saints
don't bother me
I'm not alone you see.

(Chorus)

I know. I just looke up Cahoots and it came out in 71, for some reason I was thinking 73. Either way I assumed he got it from Dylan. But then again with all that time he spent with the band on that train maybe he learned it there.

Masterpiece is indeed a Dylan song which Dylan gave to the Band to do, however Dylan, without informing the Band, released his own version on his greatest hits volume 2 album at the same time the Band's version recorded for the Cahoots album was released. I understand there were some hurt feelings over that. It is still associated with the Band as is "Tears Of Rage" another Dylan song written by Dylan for The Band. To the best of my memory Masterpiece was the last radio hit The Band ever had. The Band's version was released as a single in 1971 and got a lot of radio play back then. I still think they had the definitive version.
